My Portfolio Letter
Part 1: Multimodal
This class required me to write in many different styles to fulfil different purposes. Using a multimodal format gave me the creativity to define what I wanted in the way that I wanted. Although I don’t believe I have the most artistic mind, I was able to make the best of what I could do in the multimodal format.
When it came to doing the interviews, I had several different questions set up for both interviewees. However, the responses I got back were somewhat similar, both relating to discrimination and hate that they had faced in their lives. I couldn’t do 2 separate interview topics on the two of them so I decided to combine them. Essentially, I learned to synthesize the information while combining my own opinions in a more narrative format to get my point across. I didn’t have to use a lot of what they said because they essentially had the same thoughts as I.
The infographic was a hard topic because I didn’t have the most artistic mind. I had a lot of ideas but no idea how to express any of it. Eventually I came to the idea that I should take the information I find and express an argument that I have. Putting together the numbers especially led, to a larger argument that I was able to specify in my subtopics. It took months for this to come together but I believe I did it the best I could.
The whole website in general forced me to look at an audience beyond just the professor. I had to create content that would speak to the general public and would be appealing to all. It had to be slightly more informal than a regular paper that would have to be turned in. The youtube videos I included within the subtopic analyses are comedic but also serious at the same time.
Part 2: Critical Thinking
Choosing the artifact for the artifact analysis was the most difficult topic to choose. There were so many options with the Quran, the hijab, a passport (for identity), and many others. I had to think critically in what was the best to talk about, what is the most unknown topic? The hijab eventually came out to be the artifact because of its misinterpretation. Using the anecdote of my cousin allowed me to put my own personal flair into the topic as a male figure but also to recognize that its not a sign for oppression rather it’s a choice of a woman.
Part 3: Writing Process
The interview write-up was a different type of writing that I had to do. It became difficult when the responses from both subjects were essentially the same thing. I had to find a way to synthesize what I wanted to say with what they were also saying. I had an idea of what I needed to say but to include the essential points that they wanted to make was difficult. I came to the conclusion that I can talk about how we’ve been dealing with our situations since we were young and this is not a brand new problem. Being freshman in college, it was difficult to grow up with what we had to deal with. Overall, I was able to synthesize the interviews and my viewpoints into a more story-like write-up than just a simple narrative. I was able to include an argument while also incorporating our own stories.
